In the matter of harnessing wind power to reduce fuel consumption in ocean carriers, it would seem that the high capital cost of some of the devices being proposed make them questionable financial propositions. These high costs arise from the design policy that these devices should require no extra crew. The rig is a variant of the Dyna-rig which is being proposed for similar vessels, but because the masts are stayed instead of being unsupported this makes it a far more realistic economic p.

This is not an idea for a return to sail ocean carrier, but for a sail-assisted cargo motor-ship. Some day, cargo ships will run on clean fuel. Another reason which must be putting off ship managers is the incompatibility of rigs of any sort with bulk cargo handling machinery at terminals. Both these problems are addressed here.
